"My review may come across as something I wouldn't suggest to a friend, but indeed, I would suggest this to a friend. This type of unit, with a digital built in tuner, that actually works, is hard to find, and if found, very expensive. The price on this site, while still pricey, was about $100 less than Best Buy and some other sites. It arrived in excellent condition, and the set up was OK- the actual hooking up of the cables, etc was fine, but the on screen set up was a bit confusing. There was an insert/leaflet and manual provided. The insert was very good for the cable, etc. connections, while the manual was better for the onscreen set up. The steps were numbered, and the screenshots provided didn't exactly match what I saw on my screen and it seemed as if there were steps missing or skipped. I have no idea if I could do it twice, but I got it all set up. For my unit, the tv had to be on channel 4, not three as it suggested and the combo unit on 4 as well. the channel set up was excellent. very easy, and I was relieved when indeed, the digital channels were scanned. The unit also gives the option to set the time automatically, but it took a lot of time, so I stopped that function and set the time manually. in terms of recording, my first attempt did not work, even though the timer went off and I saw it recording and finishing. When I turned the unit on to watch, the recording wasn't there. When the time is set, there is an option to name the recording, and then set it. I do not know if this is what went wrong, because the manual directions were followed. When on the phone with support, I used the reset button on the unit, recording something again, for a few minutes, to test it, and it worked. My second attempt at recording was succesful. I named the recording this time, no idea if that's what did it. but it worked. The manual notes that this unit does not record digital stations, only the analog, but I tested that as well, and it was successful. I used DVD-R- a note, that if a DVD made from another unit, will not work with this one, unless the previously recorded DVD was finalized. To record for this unit, there is no need to finalize, the recording will work without."
