When set up correctly this microscope is fantasic at magnifications under 800x (depending on what eyepeices you have). I have a range of eyepecies and i find that if you use the 40x objective with the supplied 20x eyepeices the resulting immage is quite dark with either of the condensers. I suggest getting a 60x objective and 15x eyepecies to make it brighter but stay at a similar magnification. This can affect the quality of the immage so ensure they are Plan Acromatic objectives. The Semi-Plan objectives included are ok to the untrained eye but i would still reccomend buying a set of Plan Achromatic objectives suitable for this microscope. AM Scope have these on their website or you can easily find them on ebay. I picked up a 5 objective set for £160. The oil objective can only be used with the brightfield condenser unless you purchase the £150 Oil darkfield condenser (not puchased that yet). I assume it will be just as amazing as the difference between bright and darkfield condensers included. The detail you can see with a mix of the darkfield and plan achromatic objectives takes your breath away if your not used to looking at the micro-verse. Even if you are, it never gets old. Looking at the rotating mouth of a stentor at around 600x with the darkfield is quite something. Now for the bad points...yea there are some: The one thing i expected to be able to do with this microscope was to upgrade it. You can but only by a little bit. You cant add phase contrast! If you dont know what that is then this microscope will blow your mind and you should buy it. If you do however, that might supprise you. It certainly supprised me after spending £600 on a microscope that you cant make as good as a £700 scope with koehler illumination and phase contrast all ready fitted! After reading into this i have found that unless you want to spend £4-8000 on a fancy scope that does everything, your not going to get a scope that is good at everything. This microscope is designed around darkfield and you can tell. Adding phase contrast wouldnt be as good as the condensers they already sell as this scope is for darkfield use. If you want phase contrast or Koehler Illumination or you want infinity plan or anything like that, then you need to buy a specific microscope for that need. If your after an all rounder then this scope is not for you. I would suggest increasing your budget to £1200-2000+ and get a decent Koehler infinity plan phase contrast scope. This would be the best you can get unless you want to spend like £10k. That being said this is a very good quality scope and has been built to perfection for what it is intended for."
