As the owner of various Kindle devices - including a Colorsoft model that I use for reading color content like graphic novels, I was looking for a color epaper reader that is easier to pocket than a standard-sized Kindle. Yes, you can run the Kindle app on your phone, but a LED screen tends to be rough on your eyes. So I was excited at first to try the Boox Palma 2 Pro (P2P) - but hated their implementation of the color screen. You’ll read lots of online chatter that says the Kaleido 3 color epaper technology used by Boox, Amazon, and Viwoods looks the same, regardless of device, but that is simply not true. Whereas different manufacturers may use differing lighting systems, add additional layers for pen recognition technology and have different surface layer material, there’s a lot of factors that can impact the clarity of the display. The Boox looked “dirty”, fuzzy, and dark with their implementation. More than a few reviews have noted a large gap distance between the actual display and the surface layer due to the pen recognition layer and the surface material. By comparison, the Viwoods is brighter and clearer. Now, that is not to say that it is clear and bright as a B&W reader as the color filter layer of Kaleido 3 does have an impact, but it’s closer in quality to the Kindle Colorsoft experience. Now on to expectations. As I noted, I was primarily interested in this device as a reader to be able to use the Kindle app for my significant library of purchased Kindle books. I had no interest in using it as a notepad with a pen (being amazed at who would buy something this small for that purpose!), so that “advantage” of the P2P over the Viwoods was no loss for me, especially when the lack of the recognition layer allowed for more screen clarity. I also see folks who seemingly expect this device to be more phone-like and criticize the lack of speakers. While this device does allow the use of a SIM and apparently can be used for calls, that is not what I bought it for, nor its primary market. It’s a bonus for those who want to tinker with it, but I cannot imagine anyone would buy this as their primary mobile phone. As such, the lack of built in speaker enables this to be a slimmer, lighter weight design made of much more premium materials than the Boox. If you do want to go down the route of using this as a phone - or as an audio player, it does support Bluetooth."
