Before it became a kid car, it was my work vehicle. The last time I drove it down the freeway it started to lope and loose power and then seemed fine. That was at 145k. Didn't think much of it until my son told me he couldn't do much better than 65 on the freeway and was getting about 19 mpg. I had heard of valve issues with GDI engines some time ago and so I started doing research. (I had changed the plugs etc and knew blasting out the valves was going to be the next thing.) Called and got a quote, 900 bucks +tax. Told my son and let him decide what he wanted to do. He went searching and found this vacuum and walnut media blaster. His words, "Dad, this would save me like 600 bucks." I smiled proudly and agreed. We pulled the car into the garage and I sent him to YouTube to find out how to do it. I helped him disconnect the air box and wiring so he could get the air intake out. Learned real quick the PCV valve had been stuck open as there was a good amount of oil in the air intake and the valves turned out to be extra juicy. He went about turning the crank to close the valves at TDC and blasting each set while the others were taped off. I messed up and filled a cylinder with walnut media because I got distracted. So Dad had to clean that cylinder out. (Good amount of blowing and vacuuming. Engine works fine.) I found the walnut media wasn't able to completely blast everything clean. So we would loosen up the gooey stuff with a pick and a small plastic scraper, and then blast it again. Found that would work great. A minute or so of blasting, pull everything back and then scrape the stuck on stuff and then blast it for another minute or so. Then repeat on the other valve. When it was all done it looked really good. We replaced the PCV and oil separator. Broke a brittle plastic coolant return line and replaced that too. Put it all together and now the car runs like new again! What a huge difference. It's some definite amount of work, but this makes it a lot easier."
